Winter is the harder design case
In a Canadian winter the job is moisture and ammonia removal at the lowest possible heat cost. That means accurate minimum ventilation on timer and static pressure control, tight barn construction so the pressure reading means something, and inlets that throw air along the ceiling instead of dropping cold air onto birds. A barn that leaks cannot be controlled by any controller.
Inlets and static pressure
Specify inlet count and throw against barn width and design static pressure, with actuator control rather than manual adjustment. Ask each bidder for the static pressure and airflow curve they designed to, and require a tightness test at commissioning so the design assumption is verified rather than assumed.
Tunnel capacity for summer
Summer peaks still demand full tunnel capacity and wind-chill at target air speed, with evaporative cooling justified case by case against provincial humidity. Size tunnel fans on CFM per bird at final weight and confirm the fan performance figures quoted are at operating static pressure, not free air.
Heat exchangers and fuel cost
Air-to-air heat exchangers are increasingly common in Canadian broiler barns because they recover a large share of the heat that minimum ventilation removes. Evaluate them on payback against your actual fuel cost — propane, natural gas or electricity — and on the cleaning labour they add, not on brochure recovery percentages.
Controls, alarms and backup power
Ventilation failure in a Canadian winter or a summer heat event is a total-loss risk. Specify a controller with documented failsafe behaviour, an independent high and low temperature alarm with off-site notification, and standby generation with an automatic transfer switch sized for the full ventilation and heating load.

Where the cost band comes from
Equipment pricing is expressed as CAD 11–18 per square foot of barn floor, landed and installed. The band is derived from comparable sourced broiler projects in Canada and northern-climate equivalents (feeding, drinking, ventilation, heating, lighting and controls, including freight to the farm gate, installation and commissioning). It is a planning range, not a quotation — real quotes vary with brand, steel and freight pricing at the time of order.

What is excluded
Land, site works, concrete, steel shell, manure storage, generators, utility connections, quota purchase, working capital, chick, feed and vet costs, financing interest, depreciation, taxes and provincial permit fees.
