Controller capability, not brand
Specify what the controller must do: minimum ventilation on timer and static pressure, staged tunnel transition, heating and cooling stages, lighting programmes, water and feed consumption logging, and heat exchanger control if fitted. Then ask which models meet that list. Buying a brand first and discovering the missing function at commissioning is the common failure.
Failsafe behaviour is the specification
Ask, in writing, what the controller does when a sensor fails, when the network drops and when power is restored after an outage. Documented failsafe behaviour and a defined restart state matter more in a Canadian winter than any dashboard feature.
Sensors and placement
Sensor count and placement decide whether readings represent the birds or the ceiling. Specify multiple temperature sensors at bird level along the barn length, at least one humidity sensor, static pressure sensing, and water and feed meters per barn. A cheap controller with well-placed sensors outperforms an expensive one reading a single point.
Independent alarms
The alarm layer must be independent of the controller so a controller failure is still detected: high and low temperature, power failure and water flow, with off-site notification and a tested escalation list. Test it on a schedule and log the tests.
Electrical certification in Canada
Control panels are inspected against the Canadian Electrical Code through the provincial authority, ESA in Ontario. Imported panels typically need certified components or a field evaluation before they can be energised. Make certification a written contract condition with the cost of any field approval assigned to a named party before shipment.
Data, integration and support
Confirm what data leaves the barn, in what format, who owns it, and whether it can be exported or fed to a flock-management system. Then confirm remote-support hours in Canadian time zones, the cost of support calls after warranty, and how firmware updates are delivered.

Where the cost band comes from
Equipment pricing is expressed as CAD 11–18 per square foot of barn floor, landed and installed. The band is derived from comparable sourced broiler projects in Canada and northern-climate equivalents (feeding, drinking, ventilation, heating, lighting and controls, including freight to the farm gate, installation and commissioning). It is a planning range, not a quotation — real quotes vary with brand, steel and freight pricing at the time of order.

What is excluded
Land, site works, concrete, steel shell, manure storage, generators, utility connections, quota purchase, working capital, chick, feed and vet costs, financing interest, depreciation, taxes and provincial permit fees. Margin per bird is your own input — it should already net feed, chick, labour, energy and mortality against revenue.
