Pan or chain lines
Pan feeders dominate Canadian broiler grow-out: ad-lib access, easy chick start-up and low spillage. Chain lines belong in breeder and pullet barns where restricted feeding and auditable trough space per bird matter more. Mixed breeder barns commonly run male chain and female pan lines.
Line count and pan density
Line count follows barn width and bird placement, not preference — a 40 ft barn typically runs two to three lines, a 50 ft barn three, a 60 ft barn three to four. Confirm birds per pan against your target live weight rather than accepting a catalogue number: heavier Canadian target weights need tighter ratios than the default.
Drives, winches and structure
Check drive-motor ratings against total line length, winch capacity against the loaded weight of the line, and both against the truss capacity of the barn. Retrofits in older barns fail on suspension points and level tolerance far more often than on the feeder hardware itself.
Bins, augers and Canadian winters
Feed handling is where Canadian barns diverge from warm-climate designs. Specify bin boot heating or an anti-bridging arrangement, auger sizing that tolerates cold-flow feed, weather-sealed drive covers, and bin level sensing you can read without climbing in January. Where the cost band comes from
Equipment pricing is expressed as CAD 11–18 per square foot of barn floor, landed and installed. The band is derived from comparable sourced broiler projects in Canada and northern-climate equivalents (feeding, drinking, ventilation, heating, lighting and controls, including freight to the farm gate, installation and commissioning). It is a planning range, not a quotation — real quotes vary with brand, steel and freight pricing at the time of order.

What is excluded
Land, site works, concrete, steel shell, manure storage, generators, utility connections, quota purchase, working capital, chick, feed and vet costs, financing interest, depreciation, taxes and provincial permit fees.
