Start with the barn, not the brand
Fix barn dimensions, target live weight, placement density, heating fuel and available electrical service before you contact any manufacturer. Almost every disappointing Canadian equipment purchase traces back to a package sized on the supplier's default catalogue build rather than on the barn's actual geometry, service capacity and winter heat load.
What a Canadian broiler package includes
Pan or chain feeding lines with bin-to-barn conveying, regulated nipple drinking lines with water treatment, minimum and tunnel ventilation with inlets and controls, heating and — increasingly — heat exchangers, lighting, bird weighing, backup power and an alarm system. CAD budget bands and what moves them
Indicative planning bands only, not quotations. Equipment cost per barn moves with line count and automation level, the exchange rate at the time of order, whether the offer is ex-works or landed DDP at the farm gate, and whether installation is included. Always compare offers on a single basis — landed and installed — before judging price.
Electrical, building and welfare context
Installations are inspected against the Canadian Electrical Code through the provincial authority (ESA in Ontario), farm buildings follow the applicable provincial building code and farm-building standards, and bird management is assessed against the NFACC Code of Practice. Equipment sourced outside North America must have components certified or field-approved accordingly — confirm this in writing before shipment, not at inspection.
Supply management and project sizing
Broiler production in Canada is quota-based. Barn capacity should be sized against the quota you hold or expect to acquire, not against the maximum the footprint allows, and expansion timing is usually governed by quota allocation rather than by equipment lead time.
Importing: duty, freight and lead times
Most broiler equipment arrives from Europe, the US or Turkey. Ask for offers on one Incoterms basis — CIF to a named port or DDP to the farm gate — so freight, packing, brokerage and duty sit inside the number. Winter delivery windows and rural access for a 40-foot container are worth confirming in the schedule.

Where the cost band comes from
Equipment pricing is expressed as CAD 11–18 per square foot of barn floor, landed and installed. The band is derived from comparable sourced broiler projects in Canada and northern-climate equivalents (feeding, drinking, ventilation, heating, lighting and controls, including freight to the farm gate, installation and commissioning). It is a planning range, not a quotation — real quotes vary with brand, steel and freight pricing at the time of order.

What is excluded
Land, site works, concrete, steel shell, manure storage, generators, utility connections, quota purchase, working capital, chick, feed and vet costs, financing interest, depreciation, taxes and provincial permit fees. Margin per bird is your own input — it should already net feed, chick, labour, energy and mortality against revenue.
Compliance & quote basis
Pricing assumes DDP delivery to the farm gate in CAD with CSA-certified or field-approvable electrical components and provincial electrical inspection. Duties and brokerage on imported equipment are assumed to be inside the landed figure; spares packages and extended warranties are quoted separately.
