Why humidity, not temperature, drives Thai house design
Evaporative cooling works by converting sensible heat into latent heat, so its ceiling is the wet-bulb temperature. At a Thai design point of 35 °C dry-bulb and 75% RH, the wet-bulb sits near 28 °C, and even an 85%-efficient pad bank delivers only 4–7 °C of drop — nothing like the 12 °C achievable in a dry climate. That single fact reshapes the specification: air velocity at bird level must reach 2.8–3.2 m/s, stocking density should be planned at the conservative end for the final week, and the controller must run pads on humidity as well as temperature or you will make the house worse than it was.
Planning the EVAP house
A Thai closed house is typically 12–16 m wide and 100–120 m long, insulated roof and walls, with tunnel fans at one gable and a pad bank at the other. Pad area is calculated from target airflow at a 1.5–2.0 m/s face velocity, roof and wall insulation should reach U 0.4 W/m²K or better to stop solar gain, and the inlet side needs shading. Pad water needs filtration and periodic sanitisation to stop algae, and the pump should be sized so the whole pad face wets evenly rather than streaking. Complete the package with a heat-stress protocol: staged fan banks, alarm thresholds on temperature and humidity, and a standby generator that carries full tunnel load.
