Open house to closed house — the conversion project

Conversion is the dominant project type in Indonesia, and it is an engineering job, not a shopping list. The existing structure must be assessed for whether it can be sealed: roof condition and insulation, wall closure, floor and drainage, clear span and length. A house that is too wide or too short for its bird numbers will never tunnel properly no matter how many fans are added. Where the shell is sound, a conversion delivers most of the productivity gain of a new build at roughly half the equipment cost — typically USD 5–9 per bird versus USD 9–15. Where it is not, the honest advice is to build new, and we say so rather than sell a package that will underperform.

Ventilation and cooling in humid tropics

At 34 °C and 80% RH the wet-bulb sits near 30 °C, so evaporative pads deliver only 3–6 °C of cooling. The house therefore has to be designed around air velocity: 2.8–3.2 m/s at bird level in the final weeks, achieved with a properly calculated tunnel cross-section and fans specified from their curve at 25–30 Pa static pressure. Insulate the roof — solar gain through an uninsulated roof can exceed the entire cooling capacity of the pad bank on an afternoon. Add a transition-ventilation stage so the house is not forced to jump between minimum ventilation and full tunnel, which is the usual cause of chilled chicks and wet litter.

Brooding, heating and litter management

Chicks still need 32–34 °C floor temperature in week one, so plan 60–90 W/m² of LPG radiant brooding with partial-house brooding to keep fuel use sane. The bigger tropical challenge is moisture: high ambient humidity plus high stocking makes wet litter, footpad lesions and ammonia the default outcome unless minimum ventilation removes moisture rather than just heat. Specify a controller that runs minimum ventilation on a timer with humidity override, and drinker lines with regulators and flush so nipple leakage does not soak the litter line.

Power reliability and controls

PLN reliability differs sharply between Java, Sumatra, Kalimantan and eastern Indonesia. Every closed house needs a standby generator sized for full tunnel load with automatic transfer, a backup curtain-drop system that opens the house on total failure, and an independent alarm to a phone. Voltage fluctuation also kills controllers and inverter-driven fans, so include stabilisation in the scope. These items are the ones most often stripped from a quotation to hit a price point — insist they are priced explicitly, and compare suppliers with them in.

Layer and breeder projects

Indonesian egg production is still dominated by open-sided battery houses, but new investment is moving to closed-house layer systems with multi-tier cages or aviaries, belt manure removal and in-line grading. The design questions are dust, belt drying in high humidity, and light uniformity across tiers. Breeder and hatchery projects follow integrator standards, with hatchery HVAC and standby power carrying a larger cost share than in temperate markets.
