1. Feed cost: understand the build-up, then check today's number locally

Feed prices move week to week with the maize and soya harvest, the currency, and the cost of milling and transport. Any fixed figure published online is out of date before you read it, so the planning discipline is to model the build-up rather than memorise a price.

A delivered tonne of compound feed is roughly: energy cereal (maize, sorghum or wheat bran) + protein meal (soya, sunflower, cottonseed or fishmeal) + premix, minerals and additives + milling margin + bagging + inland transport to your gate. To get a usable planning number, ask two or three local feed mills for a current delivered price per tonne for broiler starter, grower and finisher (or layer mash), in your own currency, to your own district. Two structural decisions change feed cost more than negotiation does. The first is whether you buy compound feed or install on-farm milling and mixing, which lowers cost per tonne at scale but adds capital, quality control and working capital tied up in raw material. The second is feed conversion: waste, spillage and heat stress raise the feed used per kilo of meat or per egg, so feeder design and house climate are feed-cost decisions, not just welfare ones.

2. Disease prevention: distance, direction and routine

Biosecurity is the cheapest capital you will ever spend. The measures that carry the most weight in commercial houses are widely documented and mostly structural: siting distance from other poultry, live-bird markets and water bodies; a single controlled entry point with a change of clothing and footwear; vehicle and crate control at the perimeter; all-in/all-out flock management with a real downtime between batches; sealed feed storage and rodent, wild-bird and insect exclusion; clean water with a treatment point; and a written cleaning and disinfection routine between cycles.

Equipment choices support that routine or fight it. Houses that can be fully washed down, floors and drains that drain, feeders and drinkers that can be raised and cleaned, an anteroom that physically separates clean and dirty sides, and mortality handling designed at the start — all of these cost little at design stage and are expensive to retrofit. Vaccination programmes, notifiable disease rules, movement restrictions and response to HPAI or Newcastle outbreaks are veterinary and regulatory matters. Take them from your own veterinarian and your national veterinary authority — we do not issue veterinary or regulatory guidance.

3. Climate: the local condition writes the house specification

Across African markets the dominant climate patterns split into a few design cases, and each one moves a different line in the budget.

In hot and humid coastal and equatorial zones, evaporative cooling gives back less because the air already carries moisture, so air speed over the birds does the work: tunnel ventilation with adequate cross-section, tight houses that actually pull the design air speed, and corrosion-resistant hardware near the coast. In hot and arid zones, evaporative cooling pads work well, but dust and water quality become the maintenance problem, and pad and filter access matters. In highland areas, the day–night swing is the design case: a house that cools birds at midday must still hold brooding temperature at night, which pushes insulation, minimum-ventilation control and heating. Where harmattan dust or a genuine cool season occurs, filtration, curtain or inlet control and brooding capacity all move.

Backup power belongs in the climate section, not the nice-to-have section: in a tunnel-ventilated house in a hot climate, a power cut is measured in minutes.
