What a nipple drinking line consists of
Pipe and nipples, drip cups, anti-roost wiring, suspension and winch gear, a pressure regulator with a readable gauge, a flushing arrangement, a proportional medicator, filtration and a water meter. Water treatment is the block most often left out of a low bid — check for it before you compare prices.
Birds per nipple and flow rate
Ten to twelve broilers per nipple to 2.4–2.8 kg, tightening to 8–10 in hot climates or at heavier weights; breeders 8–10; caged layers 4–6 subject to cage geometry. Flow rises with age from roughly 20–30 ml/min in week one to 70–90 ml/min by day 35 on heavy broilers. Specify target flow at age in the RFQ — not just 'nipple drinkers'.
Line pressure and drinker height
Chicks start at 5–10 cm water column with the nipple at eye height; by the end of the cycle you want 20–35 cm water column and a bird drinking at about a 45-degree neck angle. Regulators must be adjustable across that range with a gauge visible from the walkway, and the winch must let a stockperson re-level the whole line quickly.
Litter quality, drip cups and welfare
Water that reaches the litter instead of the bird becomes footpad lesions, ammonia and processing downgrades. Drip cups add little per metre and are increasingly expected in welfare audits. Height and pressure discipline does the rest — most 'leaking system' complaints are a levelling problem, not a hardware fault.
Indicative cost bands
For planning only, not a quotation: USD 7–14 per running metre ex-works for pipe, nipples, drip cups, suspension and winch; USD 300–900 per pressure regulator; USD 800–2,500 per medicator. Filtration, dosing and tanks are quoted separately, and landed cost on CIF or DDP terms typically adds 15–30%.
Retrofitting older houses
Nipple line replacement is one of the highest-return retrofits in an ageing house. Scope it against existing suspension points, inlet pressure, source water quality and the fall from header to line end. Run a pressure test at the house inlet before issuing the RFQ so bidders size regulation correctly.
