What a chain feed line consists of
A closed steel trough circuit, a flat-link chain, corner wheels, a drive unit with gearbox, a feed hopper with level control, suspension and winch gear, and the controller that runs the feeding programme. Each of those is a separate line item in a quote — a bid that prices only 'feeding system, per house' cannot be compared against one that itemises drives, corners and hopper fill.
Specification bands to fix before the RFQ
Chain speed 12–36 m/min (18 m/min is the usual breeder setting); trough width 45–70 mm; chain thickness 4–6 mm hardened flat link; drive units 0.37–1.5 kW according to circuit length; and 100–150 m of circuit per drive as a working maximum. Fix these in writing so every manufacturer quotes the same machine, not their default catalogue build.
Trough space per bird
Broiler breeder females need roughly 15–18 cm of trough per bird, males 20–22 cm, floor layers 10–12 cm. Multiply bird count by the figure, halve it for double-sided access, and check the result against your house length before you accept any layout drawing. Under-specified trough space shows up as flock uniformity loss, not as an equipment fault.
Indicative cost bands
For planning only, not a quotation: USD 9–16 per running metre ex-works for trough, chain, corners and suspension; USD 1,200–3,500 per drive unit; USD 2,000–6,000 per hopper and fill system. Landed cost on CIF or DDP terms typically adds 15–30% for freight, packing and duty depending on origin and destination.
Selection criteria that matter after year one
Corner-wheel bearing quality and replacement cost, chain hardness and the supplier's replacement-section lead time, gearbox service access, level-sensor reliability, and whether the controller integrates with your existing climate computer. Ask for a priced two-year spares package with each offer — the gap between bidders is often larger there than on the headline price.
Retrofit into an existing house
Scope retrofits against truss spacing and suspension points, floor-level tolerance along the trough run, spare electrical capacity for the drives, and the turnaround window between flocks. A simple level survey along the intended line is the most valuable document you can attach to the RFQ.
