Short answer
Choose hatchery capacity from weekly chick demand, not from cabinet catalogues. Divide required chicks per week by an expected hatch of about 0.78–0.86 to get eggs set per week. Setters must hold 18/7 weeks of that intake and hatchers 3/7 weeks. Everything else — floor area, HVAC plant, standby power and staffing — follows from those two numbers.
How weekly intake sets the equipment list
On a weekly single-stage schedule, eggs occupy setters for 18 of the 21 incubation days and hatchers for the final three. Setter egg places therefore equal weekly intake × 18/7, and hatcher places equal weekly intake × 3/7. Multi-stage operations share cabinets and can reduce installed setter places by roughly 10%, at the cost of tighter biosecurity and less hatch-window control.
Chick output and what it depends on
Planning bands of 78–86% hatch of eggs set cover most commercial broiler, layer and breeder programmes. Actual hatch depends on flock age, fertility, egg storage time and handling, incubation profile accuracy and hatchery hygiene. These are operational variables outside equipment scope, so no supplier should guarantee a hatch rate in a quotation.
Building, utilities and biosecurity
Footprint covers setter and hatcher halls, egg holding at 18–20°C, transfer, chick take-off, vaccination, boxing, wash and support rooms. Add 20–30% for corridors, offices and plant rooms in detailed layouts. Airflow must move one-way from clean to dirty side, and hatcher exhaust must never mix with setter or chick-holding intake.
