Why poultry climate control matters
Birds convert feed efficiently only inside a narrow thermal window. Outside it, feed intake falls, mortality rises and, in layers, egg size and shell quality deteriorate. In hot climates a single failure hour at peak temperature can cost an entire house — which is why climate control and backup power are one decision, not two.
Tunnel ventilation
Tunnel ventilation moves air lengthwise through the house at a target speed to create a wind-chill effect on the birds. Sizing depends on house cross-section, target air speed, fan performance at working static pressure and inlet area. Fan capacity quoted at free air rather than at working pressure is one of the most common sources of under-sized systems.
Cooling pads
Evaporative pads cool incoming air by evaporation and are effective where incoming humidity is low. Pad area, water flow and distribution, air velocity through the pad, water quality and pad maintenance all determine real cooling efficiency. In very humid climates, evaporative cooling delivers less temperature drop and must be planned accordingly.
Fans and air speed
Compare fans on efficiency (airflow per watt) at your working static pressure, not on nameplate airflow. Air speed at bird level is the parameter that matters for heat removal; uneven speed across the house cross-section produces uneven performance and uneven flock weights.
Heating and brooding
Brooding demand is highest in the first days of a broiler cycle and depends on insulation, air-tightness and outside temperature. Options include radiant brooders, hot-air furnaces and heat exchangers; heat exchangers can cut fuel use in cold climates by recovering heat from exhaust air while maintaining minimum ventilation.
Insulation
Insulation reduces both heat gain in hot climates and heat loss in cold ones, and it is the cheapest permanent OPEX reduction available. Roof insulation and air-tightness matter more than wall thickness alone; a leaky house cannot hold static pressure and cannot ventilate as designed.
Humidity
High humidity limits evaporative cooling and worsens litter condition, ammonia and footpad problems; very low humidity raises dust and respiratory stress. Controllers should manage humidity alongside temperature rather than treating it as a readout.
Stocking density
Density drives heat and moisture load per square metre. Raising density without raising ventilation and cooling capacity simply moves the problem into the flock's performance — and, in welfare-regulated markets, may breach the standard the buyer must comply with.
Heat stress risk
Heat stress is a function of temperature, humidity, air speed and bird weight. The practical mitigations are: correct tunnel air speed, effective evaporative cooling where humidity allows, insulation, feeding-time management, water temperature management and — non-negotiably — automatic generator backup for ventilation.
Desert poultry houses
High day temperatures, large day-night swings, dust and often poor water quality. Design implications: heavy insulation, generous pad area with water treatment and filtration to protect pads and nipples, dust-tolerant fan and controller specification, and a strong backup power plan.
Tropical poultry houses
High humidity limits evaporative cooling, so the design leans on air speed, insulation, shading, roof reflectivity and, in some projects, mechanical cooling. Litter management and ammonia control also become harder and should be planned into ventilation rates.
Energy efficiency
Efficient fans, tight houses, correct static pressure, well-maintained pads, LED lighting and controllers that avoid over-ventilating in mild conditions. Energy is usually the second-largest OPEX line after feed in hot climates, so efficiency choices at CAPEX stage pay back over the asset's life.
Sensor and automation systems
Temperature sensors distributed across the house, humidity, static pressure, CO₂/ammonia where relevant, water and feed consumption logging, alarms with escalation and remote access. Alarm reliability and failover behaviour matter more than dashboard aesthetics.
