
Poultry house too hot — how to evaluate ventilation and cooling before you buy equipment.
Heat stress shows up as panting, reduced feed intake, uneven weights and rising mortality on peak-temperature days. Overheating is rarely one failure — it is usually a combination of insufficient air velocity, undersized or degraded cooling, poor insulation and control settings that never reach the design condition.

Start with measured air velocity, not fan count
In tunnel-ventilated broiler houses the wind-chill effect on the bird depends on velocity at bird level, not on installed fan horsepower. Measure velocity at several points along the house on a hot afternoon with the tunnel fully engaged. Low or uneven readings usually point to leaking sidewalls, blocked inlets, dirty shutters, worn belts, or a fan bank that no longer delivers rated airflow at the actual static pressure.
Then check the cooling stage
Evaporative pads only deliver their rated temperature drop when pad area matches tunnel airflow, water distribution wets the full pad face, and the pad is clean and not scaled. Undersized pad area, partially blocked distribution headers, recirculation sumps with heavy mineral load and pads past their service life all reduce the achievable drop. In very humid climates the achievable drop is inherently limited, which changes the design toward higher velocity rather than deeper cooling.
House envelope and controller settings
Roof and sidewall insulation, solar gain, curtain and door leakage and static-pressure control determine how much of the installed capacity actually reaches the birds. Controller set points, minimum ventilation curves, transition points between minimum, transitional and tunnel modes and sensor placement should be reviewed before any capital purchase — a mis-set transition point can make a correctly sized system behave like an undersized one.
Only then define the equipment scope
Once you know whether the constraint is airflow, cooling capacity, envelope or control, the equipment scope becomes specific: additional or higher-efficiency tunnel fans, pad system replacement or extension, inlet and static-pressure upgrades, insulation works, or a controller and sensor upgrade.
