Poultry farm biosecurity — zoning, wash points & disease buffers.

Biosecurity is not a checklist — it is a layout decision. This vendor-neutral guide covers zoning, perimeter, vehicle wash, shower-in/out, PPE, downtime and mortality management for commercial broiler, layer and breeder operations.

Design parameters

Farm-to-farm buffer
≥ 500 m from other poultry sites (best practice)
House-to-house spacing
≥ 15 m; ≥ 25 m between production units
Perimeter fencing
1.8–2.0 m mesh with single controlled entry
Vehicle wash
Wheel dip + chassis spray for all inbound trucks
Shower-in / shower-out
Mandatory for staff and visitors; farm-only clothing
Downtime between flocks
Broilers: 14–21 days; Layers: per rotation plan
Rodent control
External bait stations at 15 m intervals along perimeter
Mortality management
Composter or incinerator in dirty zone; no on-site burial upwind

Zoning & wash points

Clean zone

Bird houses, feed silos, egg storage — restricted access after shower-in and change of clothing.

Transition zone

Loading dock, egg dispatch, mortality collection, staff change room — physical break between clean and dirty.

Dirty zone

Staff parking, offices, vehicle wash, generator, workshop — external supply and logistics only.

Wash & disinfection

Vehicle wheel dip at gate, hand-wash + boot dip at every house entry, high-pressure washdown between flocks.

Implementation workflow

  1. Site select for disease-buffer distance (≥ 500 m from other poultry)
  2. Perimeter fence with a single controlled entry through the dirty zone
  3. Vehicle wheel dip and chassis spray at gate for every inbound truck
  4. Shower-in / shower-out block on the clean/transition boundary
  5. House-level boot dips, hand-wash and dedicated PPE per house
  6. All-in / all-out flock rotation with full clean-out and downtime
  7. Composter or incinerator for mortality — never open pit near houses
  8. Written biosecurity SOP + visitor log + rodent/insect control program

Why buffers exist

Airborne pathogens (AI, ND, MG, MS) can travel hundreds of metres on wind and dust. Buffer distance is the cheapest form of biosecurity — it cannot be replicated by disinfection alone.
