Stocking density is a regulatory, welfare and equipment decision — it drives birds per house, ventilation CFM, feeder/drinker line count and market access. This vendor-neutral guide covers commercial density caps for broilers, layers and breeders under the main welfare regimes.

Design workflow
- Confirm target market and welfare regime (EU baseline vs 39 vs 42 kg/m², US commercial, cage-free, organic)
- Fix stocking density in birds/m² and kg/m² at target slaughter weight or peak lay
- Multiply by house floor area (from the layout guide) to set birds per house
- Re-check ventilation CFM at peak live weight — density drives sensible-heat load
- Set feeder and drinker line counts per breed guide space allowance
- Confirm mortality and welfare monitoring plan (required at higher densities in EU)
- Issue RFQ on identical density + welfare regime so every quote is truly comparable
Why density is a spec, not a preference
Density drives everything downstream: house count, CAPEX per bird, ventilation CFM, feed/water infrastructure, welfare compliance and end-market pricing. Fix it before RFQ or comparative quotes will be meaningless.

What is the maximum stocking density for broilers in the EU?
The EU Broiler Directive (2007/43/EC) sets a default cap of 33 kg/m². Producers can increase to 39 kg/m² with a welfare-monitoring protocol, and to 42 kg/m² with additional criteria — cumulative daily mortality below defined thresholds and continuous environmental records. Some member states apply stricter national caps.
What density is used in US commercial broiler houses?
There is no federal cap. Most US commercial operations run 8.5–9.0 lb/ft² of live weight (~42–45 kg/m²) under NCC and integrator welfare programs. Some retail programs (Global Animal Partnership, Better Chicken Commitment) require lower densities of 30–34 kg/m² with slower-growing breeds.
What is the required space per layer hen?
EU enriched cages: 750 cm² per hen minimum. EU cage-free indoor: 1,111 cm² per hen (9 birds/m² usable). Free range: 9 birds/m² indoor plus 4 m² outdoor per hen. Organic (EU 2018/848): 6 birds/m² indoor plus 4 m² outdoor. Unenriched battery cages have been banned in the EU since 2012.
How does stocking density change equipment sizing?
Higher density means more birds/m², more feed and water consumption per m², higher heat and moisture output, and higher ammonia load — all of which increase required ventilation CFM, feeder line length, drinker line length and controller sensitivity. Getting the density right first is what makes an RFQ comparable across manufacturers.
How does density connect to house layout?
House footprint (width × length from the layout guide) × target density gives birds per house. Change the density and you either need more houses or a bigger footprint. Density also drives ventilation design — the same 1,500 m² house running 42 kg/m² needs materially more tunnel CFM than the same house at 33 kg/m².
Is lower density always more profitable?
No — it is a trade-off. Higher density lifts birds per house and CAPEX productivity, but risks mortality, footpad lesions and welfare penalties. Lower density (30–34 kg/m²) is required for retailer welfare programs and typically commands a price premium. Model both scenarios against your market before locking specs.
