Minimum ventilation is the first variable
Ammonia accumulates when the minimum ventilation rate is below what is needed to remove moisture at the current bird age, weight and outside condition. Minimum ventilation is frequently reduced in cold weather to save heating fuel, which raises in-house humidity and directly increases ammonia release. Reviewing the minimum ventilation curve, timer/fan settings, inlet opening and static pressure is the correct first step.
Moisture sources: drinkers, condensation and litter
Leaking nipples, incorrect water pressure, damaged regulators and poorly adjusted drinker height add water directly to the litter. Condensation on cold surfaces, roof leaks and inadequate insulation add more. Litter depth, type, reuse history and caking all affect how much moisture the bed can hold before ammonia release accelerates.
Density, heating and monitoring
Stocking density determines moisture and manure load per square metre. Heating type and capacity affect both litter drying and condensation. Continuous ammonia and humidity monitoring — rather than spot checks — is what allows an operator to distinguish a ventilation control problem from a moisture-source problem.
