Mozambique poultry and egg market: production, imports and who supplies what
Mozambique produced 154,454 tonnes of chicken in 2025, according to the ministry's annual food and nutrition security report as reported on 14 February 2026. In January–September 2025 the ministry counted 99.2 thousand tonnes of chicken and 23.2 million dozen eggs produced, against 21.8 thousand tonnes of chicken and 5.4 million dozen eggs imported — roughly 18% of chicken and 19% of eggs supplied in those nine months (our calculation). In 2024 Mozambique reported USD 49.3 million of poultry-meat imports (HS 0207), led by the Netherlands, Poland and Brazil, and USD 11.7 million of shell eggs (HS 0407), mostly from South Africa and Zambia. The government's stated aim is self-sufficiency in chicken and eggs with feed raw materials grown in Mozambique. For commercial buyers this points to hatchery, broiler, layer, feed-mill and processing capacity; HatchMatch reviews project briefs from USD 250,000 and approaches suppliers on the buyer's behalf.

Official production and import figures, 2024–2025
The ministry's figures are the most recent official numbers we could read on 24 October 2026. The full-year 2025 chicken figure comes from the annual SAN report as quoted by Diário Económico; we did not obtain the report itself. Full-year 2025 egg production and full-year 2025 imports were not published in any source we could read, so the nine-month figures are shown as they are and not extrapolated.
Import share (our calculation from the ministry's January–September 2025 figures, ignoring exports and stocks): chicken 21.8 ÷ (99.2 + 21.8) ≈ 18%; eggs 5.4 ÷ (23.2 + 5.4) ≈ 19%. The ministry did not say which product codes its import figures cover, so do not add them to the customs data below.

Poultry-meat imports in 2024 (HS 0207): about USD 49.3 million
Mozambique reported USD 49,290,440 and 53,369 tonnes of HS 0207 imports for 2024 (UN Comtrade via WITS, reporter-side data, not partner mirror data). HS 0207 covers meat and edible offal of all poultry species, fresh, chilled or frozen, so it is broader than chicken meat and is not comparable with the ministry's chicken figures.
European origins (the Netherlands and Poland) supplied more than a third of the value; Brazil was third. A trade flow in 2024 is not evidence that an origin, a plant or a product is eligible today.
| Origin | Value (USD) | Quantity | Share of value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Netherlands | 9.95 million | 10,803 t | 20.2% |
| Poland | 8.74 million | 10,158 t | 17.7% |
| Brazil | 6.83 million | 8,062 t | 13.9% |
| United States | 3.10 million | 2,585 t | 6.3% |
| Ukraine | 2.82 million | 2,957 t | 5.7% |
| South Africa | 1.53 million | 553 t | 3.1% |
| All origins | 49.29 million | 53,369 t | 100% |

Shell-egg imports in 2024 (HS 0407): about USD 11.7 million, mainly regional
Mozambique reported USD 11,726,630 and 1,367 tonnes of shell-egg imports for 2024. The published category (HS 040700) does not separate table eggs from hatching eggs, so this total must not be read as table-egg demand; a table-egg-only series could not be retrieved.
Some rows carry very high values per kilogram — for example USD 818,550 for 356 kg from Zimbabwe — which points to hatching eggs, mixed products or reporting differences. Do not derive prices from these rows.
| Origin | Value (USD) | Quantity as reported | Share of value |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Africa | 6.52 million | 780.8 t | 55.6% |
| Zambia | 2.99 million | 452.8 t | 25.5% |
| Malawi | 0.84 million | 111.6 t | 7.1% |
| Zimbabwe | 0.82 million | 356 kg | 7.0% |
| Brazil | 0.40 million | 20.9 t | 3.4% |
| All origins | 11.73 million | 1,367 t | 100% |

Import substitution: what the government has said
On 29 October 2025 the Minister of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries said the government wants the sector to reach self-sufficiency, reduce imports and make chicken and eggs “made in Moz”, with feed raw materials “totally produced in Mozambique”. The government was finalising a Poultry Sector Master Plan with the business confederation CTA, GAIN, the poultry industry association and other stakeholders.
This is a stated objective and a plan in preparation. In the sources we read it is not an enacted import ban, a tariff change or a subsidy scheme, and no quantified results are published yet. Check the final Master Plan before using it in a business case.
- Day-old chicks and parent stock: domestic hatchery and breeder capacity shortens the input chain and reduces exposure to import licensing for live animals.
- Feed: the stated aim is domestic feed raw materials (maize, soya); feed milling and grain storage sit at the centre of any substitution plan.
- Broiler and layer housing: imports still covered roughly a fifth of chicken and egg supply in January–September 2025.
- Processing and cold chain: most imported poultry meat arrives frozen, so domestic chilling, freezing and cold storage capacity is part of the substitution case.

Import licences, veterinary certificates and recent market-access changes
The ministry states that veterinary border control works through import licences and veterinary certificates for animals, their products, by-products and fodder; its citizen-services page lists the application for an animal import licence. A 2024 USDA report adds the general shipping documents (import permit, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of entry, certificate of origin and transport documents). Product-specific certificate wording, testing, quarantine and fees were not published in the sources we read.
Two changes were reported: on 17 May 2024 Mozambique lifted its ban on South African poultry products, on condition that they come from birds in avian-influenza-free compartments approved by the veterinary authorities; and on 22 December 2025 Brazil's agriculture ministry announced authorisation for Brazilian hatching eggs and day-old chicks. Neither report is a current admissibility notice.
| Product | What the sources show | Status for a transaction |
|---|---|---|
| Day-old chicks and live birds | Licence and veterinary certificate framework; South African chicks named in the May 2024 lifting; Brazilian chicks authorised Dec 2025 (news report) | Regulatory check required before publication or transaction |
| Hatching eggs | Same framework; South African and Brazilian hatching eggs named in the reports above | Regulatory check required before publication or transaction |
| Frozen poultry meat | Same framework; South African frozen poultry meat named in the May 2024 lifting | Regulatory check required before publication or transaction |
| Table eggs | Same framework; no current product-specific notice found | Regulatory check required before publication or transaction |
| Feed and feed ingredients | Fodder is listed under veterinary border control | Regulatory check required before publication or transaction |
| Equipment and buildings | Not covered by the veterinary sources; general customs documents apply | Confirm customs, standards and electrical requirements with the importer of record |
Where production is concentrated and how supply is organised
In 2023 Maputo province produced 66% of Mozambique's poultry meat, Nampula 11%, Manica 9% and Maputo city 5%, according to the national livestock statistics bulletin as reproduced by the Observatório do Meio Rural. These are 2023 shares, not a 2025 ranking. Typical feed raw materials are maize, soya, fishmeal and vitamins.
Integrated producers often supply day-old chicks, feed and technical support to contract growers and buy the grown birds back for slaughter. Standard Bank describes this model at Novos Horizontes in Nampula, and IFC's Higest disclosure includes upgrading outgrower operations. Project scopes in Mozambique therefore often cover a hatchery, a feed mill, grower houses and a processing plant as one chain.
Producers, hatcheries and feed mills named in public sources
These are the companies we researched, with the roles the cited sources support and the most recent dated evidence we found. The list is alphabetical, it is not a ranking, a supplier list or an endorsement, and it is not complete. Inclusion does not mean a relationship with HatchMatch, an approval or an audit. Capacities are quoted only as stated by the source; they are not verified throughput. We publish no contact details: when a qualified brief needs a local producer or project partner, our team makes the approach on the buyer's behalf.

Buyer questions
- How much chicken did Mozambique produce in 2025?
- 154,454 tonnes, according to the ministry's annual food and nutrition security (SAN) report as reported by Diário Económico on 14 February 2026. The ministry's own October 2025 statement gave 99.2 thousand tonnes for January–September 2025 and about 135 thousand tonnes for the previous year.
- How many eggs does Mozambique import?
- The ministry reported 5.4 million dozen eggs imported in January–September 2025, against 23.2 million dozen produced. In 2024 Mozambique reported USD 11.7 million of shell-egg imports (HS 0407), mostly from South Africa (USD 6.5 million) and Zambia (USD 3.0 million); that category does not separate table eggs from hatching eggs.
- Where does Mozambique import chicken from?
- In 2024 the largest origins of HS 0207 poultry-meat imports by value were the Netherlands (USD 9.9 million), Poland (USD 8.7 million), Brazil (USD 6.8 million), the United States (USD 3.1 million) and Ukraine (USD 2.8 million), out of USD 49.3 million in total. These are historical flows, not proof that an origin or plant is eligible today.
- Has Mozambique banned poultry or egg imports?
- The sources we read show a self-sufficiency objective and a Poultry Sector Master Plan in preparation (October 2025), not a general import ban. A ban on South African poultry products was lifted in May 2024 on condition that products come from avian-influenza-free compartments. Current conditions for a specific product and origin must be confirmed with the veterinary authority before ordering.
- Which Mozambican companies run hatcheries or supply day-old chicks?
- Public sources describe hatchery operations at Higest Moçambique (Maputo province), Novos Horizontes (Nampula), Ovos de Ouro (Boane), ManMart (Macia and Maputo) and, historically, Abílio Antunes (Manica). Current output and availability need confirmation for each. HatchMatch does not publish contact details and approaches companies only for a qualified brief.
- Does HatchMatch import, export, certify or supply poultry in Mozambique?
- No. HatchMatch Group is a buyer-side sourcing service: it reviews commercial briefs and approaches suppliers on the buyer's behalf. It is not a manufacturer, exporter, importer, certifier or operator, and it does not guarantee availability, compliance or outcomes.
