Procuring a commercial poultry project in Mozambique: checklists and RFQ by segment
Start from the production target and the input chain, not from an equipment list. Mozambique produced 154,454 tonnes of chicken in 2025, yet imports still covered roughly 18% of chicken and 19% of eggs supplied in January–September 2025 (ministry figures, our calculation), and the government's stated aim is self-sufficiency with domestic feed. Projects that respond to this gap usually combine a hatchery, breeder or grower houses, a feed mill and a processing plant. Before asking for quotes, fix the weekly output, where parent stock or day-old chicks will come from, the feed supply, power and water, the cold chain, and the import licences and veterinary certificates each consignment needs. Then send one comparable RFQ. HatchMatch reviews commercial briefs from USD 250,000 and approaches manufacturers on the buyer's behalf; it does not design, build, operate, import or certify.

Decide what the project must produce before you ask for equipment
Budgets, yields and payback belong in the farm cost calculator, which uses your own inputs. This guide does not give prices.
- Output per week or per day: chicks per week, birds per cycle, eggs per day, tonnes of feed per hour or birds per hour at the plant.
- Market channel: frozen retail, chilled or live-bird sales, food service, institutions or the company's own downstream plant. This decides processing, packing and cold storage.
- Integration level: own parent stock or bought-in day-old chicks; own grower houses or contract growers. Integrated producers in Mozambique commonly supply chicks and feed to contract growers and buy back the birds.
- Site: province and district, plot size, access road, distance to the port and to the market, and the existing buildings to keep or convert.
- Utilities: grid capacity and reliability, generator back-up, water source and quality. These decide climate-control and cooling options.
- Phasing: what must run in phase 1 and what can follow, so suppliers quote the same scope.
Segment checklist: what to specify in the RFQ
Use one row per segment in your brief. The acceptance column is what to ask suppliers to demonstrate before final payment; it is evidence to request, not a performance promise.
| Segment | Capacity to state | Scope items to specify | Acceptance evidence to request |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatchery and day-old chicks | Eggs set and saleable chicks per week; species and line | Egg room, setters and hatchers (single- or multi-stage), chick processing, vaccination, hygiene zoning, chick transport, generator and water back-up | Factory acceptance test (FAT) of incubators; temperature and humidity logs; site acceptance (SAT) over the first hatches |
| Breeder (parent stock) farm | Parent females housed; hatching eggs per week | Rearing and production houses, nests and slats, egg collection and storage, biosecurity zoning, feeding control | Commissioning of feeding and climate systems; egg-collection and storage temperature records |
| Broiler houses | Birds per cycle, cycles per year, number of houses | Climate control for heat and humidity (tunnel ventilation, evaporative cooling), feeding and drinking lines, lighting, controller and alarms, generator | SAT at first placement: airflow and temperature readings, alarm and back-up tests |
| Layer houses and egg handling | Hens housed; eggs per day | Housing system (cage, enriched colony or cage-free/aviary), manure handling, egg collection, grading, packing and cool storage | Egg-belt and grading throughput test; cool-room temperature log |
| Feed mill | Tonnes per hour; mash or pellet; bagged or bulk | Raw-material intake and storage (maize, soya), grinding, batching and mixing, pelleting and cooling, bagging, dust and fire safety | Test run at rated tonnes per hour with mixing-uniformity check |
| Processing plant | Birds per hour; chilled or frozen; cut-up share | Receiving and stunning, slaughter, scalding and plucking, evisceration, chilling, cut-up, packing, blast freezing, cold store, wastewater | FAT and SAT at rated birds per hour; chilling and freezing temperature curves |
Plan the input chain: chicks, feed, power and water
Day-old chicks and hatching eggs: domestic integrated producers run hatcheries and breeder farms, and IFC's 2024–2026 disclosure for Higest finances a hatchery expansion. Imports are possible under licence: Mozambique lifted its ban on South African poultry products in May 2024 on condition of avian-influenza-free compartments, and Brazil announced authorisation for hatching eggs and day-old chicks in December 2025. Confirm the current conditions for your exact origin before ordering.
Feed: typical raw materials are maize, soya, fishmeal and vitamins, and one integrated producer lists maize, soy oil and bran from the milling industry as its main ingredients. The government wants feed raw materials produced in Mozambique, so raw-material intake, drying and storage deserve as much attention in the RFQ as the mill itself.
Power and water: ask each supplier for connected load, generator sizing and water demand at peak, so climate control, cooling and plant hygiene can be compared on the same basis. One integrated producer is building automated, climate-controlled houses to improve feed conversion (October 2026 report); state your own climate-control concept rather than assuming one design fits every site.
Import licences, veterinary certificates and shipping documents
The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Fisheries states that veterinary border control uses import licences and veterinary certificates for animals, animal products, by-products and fodder, and its citizen-services page lists the animal import licence request. A 2024 USDA report lists the general documents: import permit, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of entry, certificate of origin and transport documents, with veterinary certificates for live animals.
Certificate wording, testing, quarantine, permit validity and fees for each product were not published in the sources we read. For live birds, day-old chicks, hatching eggs, feed and animal products: Regulatory check required before publication or transaction. HatchMatch does not obtain permits; the importer of record and the exporter remain responsible.
- Equipment and steel buildings: confirm customs classification, standards and electrical requirements with the importer of record and a customs broker.
- Live animals and hatching eggs: agree the veterinary certificate model and the transport plan before the supplier contract is final.
- Feed additives and premixes: check whether the product falls under veterinary border control for fodder before shipping.
Fields a Mozambique project brief should include
- Project type and segments (hatchery, breeder, broiler, layer, feed mill, processing or a full chain) and the weekly output target.
- Site province and district, and whether civil works are local or part of the supplier scope.
- Delivery terms (Incoterms) and the port of entry the buyer prefers, for example Maputo, Beira or Nacala.
- Power supply and back-up, water source, and the climate-control concept for heat and humidity.
- Installation, commissioning, operator training and manuals in Portuguese; spare parts kept in country; warranty and service response.
- Acceptance tests (FAT and SAT) and payment milestones tied to them.
- Budget range (from USD 250,000), timing, and whether the buyer is seeking separate financing (HatchMatch is not a lender).
How to compare proposals for Mozambique
| Criterion | Why it matters | Evidence to ask for |
|---|---|---|
| Scope completeness | Missing items (generators, cold store, civil works) make prices look lower than they are | Line-item scope against your brief, with exclusions listed |
| Climate suitability | Heat and humidity drive bird performance and energy use | Design conditions used, airflow and cooling calculations |
| Installation and after-sales | Remote sites need local or regional technicians and spare parts | Named service arrangement, spare-parts list and lead times |
| Power and water demand | Grid limits and generator fuel affect running cost | Connected load, peak water demand, generator sizing |
| Documentation and training | Operators need manuals and training in Portuguese | Language of manuals, training plan and duration |
| Acceptance and warranty | Final payment should follow demonstrated performance of the installed system | FAT/SAT protocol, warranty terms and exclusions |
Local producers, partners and market evidence
Mozambique has integrated producers with hatcheries, feed mills and processing, and companies that specialise in feed or eggs. Their sourced roles, locations and what still needs confirmation are on the Mozambique market page. HatchMatch does not publish contact details; if a qualified brief needs a local producer, grower network or installation partner, our team makes the approach on the buyer's behalf.
In 2024 Mozambique reported USD 49.3 million of poultry-meat imports (HS 0207), mostly frozen product from Europe and Brazil, which is why processing and cold-chain capacity often belongs in the same project plan as the farms.
Buyer questions
- What is the minimum project size HatchMatch reviews for Mozambique?
- Infrastructure projects (hatcheries, breeder, broiler and layer farms, feed mills, processing plants) start from USD 250,000 in total value. Buyers pay nothing. Buying chicken or eggs uses the separate product sourcing request.
- Can day-old chicks or hatching eggs be imported into Mozambique?
- Imports of animals and animal products need an import licence and veterinary certificates. Reported changes include the lifting of the ban on South African poultry products in May 2024, conditional on avian-influenza-free compartments, and Brazil's December 2025 announcement of authorisation for hatching eggs and day-old chicks. Confirm current conditions for the exact origin with the veterinary authority before ordering.
- Which documents does an equipment shipment to Mozambique need?
- A 2024 USDA report lists an import permit, commercial invoice, packing list, bill of entry, certificate of origin and transport documents for imports in general. Confirm classification, standards and electrical requirements for your equipment with the importer of record and a customs broker.
- Should a broiler project in Mozambique use climate-controlled houses?
- There is no universal answer. One integrated producer in Nampula is building automated, climate-controlled houses to improve feed conversion (October 2026 report). Ask suppliers to quote open-sided and controlled options for the same output, and compare budgets and payback in the farm cost calculator with your own inputs.
- Does HatchMatch design, build or operate the project?
- No. HatchMatch reviews the brief and approaches independent manufacturers and contractors on the buyer's behalf. It is not a manufacturer, contractor, exporter, importer, certifier or operator, and it does not guarantee prices, delivery or performance.
