Free-range, pasture and specialty eggs

Shell eggs sold with a production-system or composition claim other than organic: free-range, barn or cage-free, pasture-raised, or nutritionally enriched (for example omega-3). Each claim needs its own evidence. Some production-system terms are defined in law — the EU sets minimum rules for free-range eggs — while others depend on a private scheme, and nutrition claims must meet the destination's claims rules.

Quick answer

Free-range, pasture and specialty eggs: Retail and foodservice programmes that sell eggs on a production-system claim (free-range, barn, pasture) or a nutrition claim such as omega-3. In a request, state each claim you need on pack, and the law or scheme that defines it; grade and weight class; for enriched eggs: the nutrient, the target content and the laboratory method. HatchMatch reviews it and contacts suppliers for you; supplier, availability, price and origin are confirmed per request.

Intended use: Retail and foodservice programmes that sell eggs on a production-system claim (free-range, barn, pasture) or a nutrition claim such as omega-3.

General facts

About this type of product or system in general — not about any supplier.

EU free-range minimum
Continuous daytime access to open-air runs mainly covered with vegetation; max 2,500 hens per hectare (1 hen per 4 m²)[1]
EU barn and enriched-cage systems
Minimum welfare standards in Directive 1999/74/EC[2]
EU egg marking
Producer code shows the farming method: 1 free range, 2 barn, 3 cages (0 is organic)[3]
Nutrition claims (EU)
Claims such as 'source of omega-3' must meet the conditions in the annex to Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006[4]
Indicative HS heading
0407.21 — indicative six-digit heading; the national tariff line and any ruling decide[5]

Traceability, packaging and logistics

Traceability
Each lot should link to the flock, the scheme or registration behind the claim and, for nutrition claims, the laboratory results for that production period.
Packaging
Retail cartons carry the claim wording; state the exact wording and the languages so suppliers can check it against the destination's rules.
Handling and transport
Eggs with different claims must not be mixed during grading and packing. Agree storage and transport conditions as for all shell eggs.

Procurement risks to check

General risks for this type of system — not a finding about any supplier.

  • Claim wording not allowed in the destination market
  • Nutrition claim without accredited laboratory results for the current flock and feed
  • Scheme certificate expired or not covering the supplying flock

What to specify in your request

  • Each claim you need on pack, and the law or scheme that defines it
  • Grade and weight class
  • For enriched eggs: the nutrient, the target content and the laboratory method
  • Packing, labelling language and claim wording
  • Quantity per delivery, frequency and programme length
  • Destination and Incoterm

Documents buyers commonly ask for

Where the product and route require them. Requirements differ by product and country; there is no single checklist.

  • Scheme certificate or official registration for each production-system claim
  • Producer registration showing the farming-method code, where the EU rules apply
  • Accredited laboratory results for any nutrition claim
  • Health or veterinary certificate required by the destination
  • Lot traceability from flock to pack

Questions buyers ask

Is free-range the same as organic?
No. Free-range describes housing and outdoor access; organic is a certified production method that also covers feed, veterinary treatment and stocking density. In the EU the egg code shows which applies: 1 for free range, 0 for organic.
What evidence supports an omega-3 or other nutrition claim?
Accredited laboratory results for the eggs, linked to the flock and feed used, and wording that meets the destination's claims rules — in the EU, the conditions in Regulation (EC) No 1924/2006.
