Decide system by system, not farm by farm. Score each system for remaining useful life, spare-part availability and failure consequence; where several critical systems are near end of life in the same house, replacement usually beats another round of repairs.

Four possible paths
Most aging-farm projects end at one of these; the assessment decides which.
- Selected-system upgrade — replace the one or two systems that fail
- Staged modernization — one house or one system per year on a fixed programme
- Full retrofit of a house to current specification
- New houses, retiring or repurposing the oldest ones
Count the repair spend you already accept
Annual maintenance, emergency call-outs, lost cycles and performance drift are the true baseline against which modernization is judged. Farms that skip this step almost always overestimate the cost of modernizing.
Modernize with the next expansion in mind
If capacity growth is likely within five years, choose controllers, feed systems and electrical capacity that the future houses can join. Replacing them twice is the most common avoidable cost in poultry modernization.
