Uganda poultry import guide: trade evidence, permits and border steps

Uganda's 2024 trade is a hatchery and production story, not a meat-import one: it reported only USD 0.20 million of poultry-meat imports (HS 0207) but 8.02 million imported day-old chicks (HS 0105.11, USD 7.94 million) and USD 3.79 million of poultry-keeping machinery (HS 8436.29). Imports of animals and animal products need a permit from the Commissioner Animal Health before shipment.

Checked . Trade figures are 2025 and 2024 UN Comtrade data published by World Bank WITS, by product code; 2025 reporting is still incomplete. They are historical evidence only — not proof that any origin or plant is eligible today, has stock, or will quote.

How each product lane and code is defined

Official import authority, permit and certificate sources

Eligibility is specific to the commodity, origin country and region, establishment and current disease status, and it changes. Check the current official list for the exact consignment. How rules differ for live birds, hatching eggs, eggs, meat and machinery.

Border entry steps

  1. Apply to the Commissioner Animal Health for an import permit and the animal-health protocol before importation.
  2. The origin veterinary certificate must attest the permit's conditions; a veterinary inspector checks the consignment at the port of entry.

Buyer checklist and product specification

  • For chicks or hatching eggs: breed and parent-stock level, flock health status and vaccination, quantity per delivery and arrival schedule.
  • For hatchery or farm equipment: capacity, power supply and backup, and who installs and commissions it.
  • Hatchery, breeder and farm projects need a confirmed budget of USD 250,000 or more.

Cold-chain and live-animal handling

  • Day-old chicks must reach the farm within the time stated on the certificate, in ventilated chick boxes at controlled temperature; plan the airport-to-farm road leg.

Send an RFQ

HatchMatch coordinates sourcing and RFQs for commercial buyers. It does not own farms, hatcheries, slaughterhouses or stock, and cannot guarantee supply, customs clearance, delivery, certification or price. Requests start at USD 250,000; buyers pay nothing. Every brief is reviewed by a person before any supplier is approached, and your identity stays private — we aim to reply within two business days.
