Feed conversion ratio is kilograms of feed consumed per kilogram of live weight produced. An FCR of 1.65 means 1.65 kg of feed produced 1 kg of live bird. Lower is better. Compare only like-for-like: at the same average weight, same age and the same feed-inclusion basis (as-fed, not dry matter).
On a 30,000-bird house finishing at 2.4 kg with feed at $420/t, 0.05 FCR is roughly $1,500 per cycle, or around $10,500 a year at seven cycles. That figure — not the equipment price — is the correct yardstick for feeder, drinker and climate-control upgrades.
Use actual FCR for cash decisions and weight-corrected FCR for benchmarking between flocks harvested at different weights. This calculator works on actual as-fed FCR at the average live weight you enter.
Birds that die still ate. The model charges mortality with 40% of a full cycle's intake, because deaths cluster in the first week and again near the end. Ignoring that understates feed by 1–3% on a typical flock.
Do not ask suppliers to guarantee FCR — no equipment vendor controls genetics, feed quality or management. Instead specify the things they do control: feed-pan distribution uniformity, water line pressure regulation, house temperature and static-pressure control accuracy, and downtime response.
