Decide the system before you shortlist
Conventional cage where permitted, enriched colony, aviary, barn and free range differ in cost per hen, labour, egg quality handling and regulatory exposure. Ask suppliers to price one system, or price each system as a separate tender.
- Target market and any retailer or export requirement that constrains the system
- Regulatory position in your country now and over the asset's life
- Hens housed per house and number of houses in this phase
- Pullet rearing in scope or bought in, and the transfer age
- Egg destination: on-farm grading, off-site packing centre, or direct sale
Scope items that must be identical across layer bids
These are the items where layer bids most often diverge without the difference being visible in the total.
- Hens housed and usable area per hen, stated to the standard you must meet
- Tier count, row count and aisle width — these fix the building, not just the equipment
- Feeding system type and daily feeding cycles supported
- Drinking line layout, nipple count per hen and water filtration
- Egg collection: rod or belt type, elevator, cross-conveyor and eggs per hour
- Manure belt, drying scope, and the destination the belt discharges to
- Lighting programme control and dimming range
- Climate control, ammonia and CO₂ sensing, and alarm redundancy
Service terms matter more here than in broiler
A layer house cannot be emptied to fix a conveyor. Treat service response and stocked spares as scored criteria, not as an afterthought.
- Contractual response time for a stopped egg conveyor or manure belt
- Local stock list for belts, motors, gearboxes, nipples and sensors
- Whether the supplier's technician visa and travel time are included in the response time
- Availability of remote diagnostics on the controller supplied

Comparable means every bidder priced the same duty, the same design conditions and the same delivery point. Where a column is blank in a real offer, treat it as excluded until the supplier confirms otherwise in writing.

Lifecycle cost drivers in layer equipment bids
A layer flock stays in the house for 60–80 weeks with no clean-out window, so energy and wear items run continuously and a stopped conveyor is a revenue event. Lifecycle cost carries more weight here than in almost any other poultry segment.
Cost drivers that outlast the purchase price
- Conveyor and belt energy: egg collection and manure belts run every day of the flock with no downtime window.
- Manure drying: belt-air or drying-tunnel fans are a permanent load, and scope differences here change kWh per hen materially.
- Feed system run hours: many short cycles on small drives versus few long ones — ask each bidder for the energy basis, not the motor list.
- Lighting: 16-hour programmes turn lamp efficacy and dimming quality into a 15-month operating line.
- Service response: a stopped egg conveyor in week 40 is lost graded eggs, not a maintenance ticket — response terms are a cost driver.
Request these inputs from every bidder
- Expected annual kWh per hen place, stating whether egg belts, manure drying and lighting are included
- Motor and drive schedule for egg collection, manure and feed systems
- Recommended maintenance budget across a full laying cycle, including belt wear parts
- Priced spares for belts, motors, gearboxes, nipples and sensors, with local stock stated
- Contractual response time and exactly what it includes (travel, visa, first visit)
- Delivered lead time in weeks and the installation duration inside it
