When expansion makes economic sense
Expansion is justified when demand for the added output is contracted or clearly available, when the existing site still has headroom in land, power, water and feed logistics, and when the operation can absorb a construction programme without losing biosecurity control. Where any of those is absent, the honest options are modernization of what already exists, or a second site.
Upgrade or build new
Modernizing existing houses is usually cheaper per bird place and faster to commission, but it inherits the span, height, airtightness and floor of the building you already have. A converted house with a compromised cross-section will underperform a new one for its whole life. Compare retrofit CAPEX plus the resulting performance ceiling against new-build CAPEX before committing.
Assessing existing infrastructure
- Land available at safe separation distances, with allowance for the phase after this one
- Transformer rating, distribution and standby generation against the added connected load
- Water at peak day including evaporative cooling, plus at least 48 hours of storage
- Feed silo volume, intake logistics and delivery frequency
- Ventilation and cooling capacity for the climate you actually design to
- Egg handling, manure handling and off-take arrangements at the new volume
- Labour availability and maintenance capability for the automation tier chosen
- Site layout, road separation and biosecurity during construction
Capacity planning
House count follows birds per house, and birds per house follows density, climate and housing system. Broiler density falls from 14–16 birds/m² in temperate conditions to 11–14 in hot, humid climates. Layer capacity depends on tier count and whether the system is floor, enriched cage or multi-tier aviary. Larger houses lower cost per bird place but concentrate risk and demand tighter climate control.
Project phasing
Above roughly 60% growth, phasing is the norm. Shared infrastructure — transformer, water, silos, egg room, roads — should still be sized for the final capacity in the first phase, because retrofitting it later costs more than building it once.
CAPEX and RFQ preparation
Cost drivers are country and logistics, house size and system, automation tier, climate equipment, civil works, electrical infrastructure, backup power, feed and manure handling, installation and commissioning. A comparable RFQ states capacity, dimensions, design conditions, scope boundaries, phasing, training and spares — otherwise quotations cannot be compared at all.
No performance improvement is promised here. Any figure produced by the tools is an indicative planning band.
