Grandparent Stock Facilities

Grandparent stock (GPS) facilities house the elite breeding flock imported directly from primary breeders. Their output is parent stock hatching eggs. GPS sites operate at the highest commercial biosecurity tier below the primary-breeder pedigree lines.

Supplier-neutral educational content. HatchMatch does not rank suppliers.

Role within the project

GPS is the national or regional gate-keeper for genetic supply. A single disease outbreak or biosecurity breach at a GPS site can compromise commercial output for 12–18 months across the value chain.

Typical applications

  • Broiler grandparent stock (GPS) rearing and production
  • Layer grandparent stock rearing and production

Selection criteria

  • Direct approval from a primary breeder (Aviagen, Cobb, EW / Hy-Line, ISA)
  • Isolated site — often >3 km from other poultry
  • Redundant power, water and feed supply chains
  • Documented import-quarantine protocol

Engineering considerations

  • Fully redundant ventilation, power, water
  • Import quarantine housing separate from production
  • Elite egg-room with UPS-backed refrigeration
  • Air filtration or positive-pressure options at high-risk sites

Commercial considerations

  • Highest CAPEX per bird in the poultry pyramid
  • Insurance-mandated resilience level
  • Long-lead genetic-import scheduling
  • Trade-agreement compliance for cross-border movement

Procurement considerations

  • Primary breeder engagement at concept stage — non-negotiable
  • Site selection screened by aerial and epidemiological survey
  • Utility redundancy validated before build
  • Quarantine and testing pathway agreed with national veterinary authority

Common mistakes

  • Under-scoping utility redundancy
  • Locating near commercial poultry corridors
  • Skipping air-filtration at high-risk AI locations
  • Non-standard biosecurity flow that fails primary-breeder audit

Frequently asked

How rare are GPS sites?
Most countries have between zero and a handful of GPS sites — many countries import PS directly and skip domestic GPS. A GPS project should only be developed with primary-breeder engagement and long-term offtake commitments.
What is the biosecurity difference between GPS and PS?
GPS typically adds redundant utilities, air filtration or positive pressure, and 3+ km isolation. Costs run 2–3× a PS build per bird capacity.
