Layer housing systems

Cage Systems

Cage systems house commercial layers in tiered structures with automated feed, water, egg-collection and manure-belt handling. Conventional cages are being phased out in the EU and some other jurisdictions; enriched (furnished) cages remain accepted in many markets.

Role within the project

Cage systems maximise birds per m² and mechanisation of egg collection and manure handling. The trade-off is welfare regulation exposure and export-market constraints.

Typical applications

  • Conventional cage systems (declining, market-restricted)
  • Enriched / furnished cage systems
  • High-rise and manure-belt cage layouts

Selection criteria

  • Compliance with target-market welfare rules
  • Stack height compatible with house clearance
  • Egg-belt cracked-egg data at commercial throughput
  • Manure-belt drying and export handling

Engineering considerations

  • Floor flatness ±3 mm/3 m for high stacks
  • Manure-belt slope and aeration for pre-drying
  • Ventilation profile per tier — top tier receives most air
  • Emergency drop-side and standby feed/water

Commercial considerations

  • Per-bird CAPEX lower than cage-free at commercial scale
  • Regulatory risk premium if targeting export markets
  • Retrofit path to enriched or cage-free

Procurement considerations

  • Confirm welfare compliance at target-market level, not local minimum
  • Egg-belt and manure-belt independent commissioning
  • Retrofit optionality clause in contract

Common mistakes

  • Building conventional cages in markets moving to enriched or cage-free
  • Ignoring manure-belt export handling — bottleneck at flock end
  • No stand-by power for cage feed lines — welfare risk
  • Floor flatness out of tolerance — belt misalignment
