What the batching layer actually controls
Macro, minor and micro dosing across separate scale ranges, ingredient call sequence and tolerance, mixer time and discharge interlocks, liquid addition, bin inventory and reconciliation, recipe version control, operator access levels and alarm handling. Ask every bidder for a written I/O list and tag count — it is the only way to compare scope honestly.
Accuracy targets that belong in the specification
Working targets: macro ingredients ±0.5% of batch weight, minors ±0.2%, micro and liquids ±0.1% or better on a dedicated small-range scale. An accuracy figure without its scale range is not a specification. Require accuracy stated per scale and the calibration procedure that supports it.
Traceability and feed-safety records
Per-batch retention of recipe version, ingredient lots, actual weights, operator identity, timestamps and deviations — with tamper-evident storage, a defined retention period and exportable audit reports. Confirm the export format satisfies the feed-safety scheme in your market before contract, not during your first audit.
ERP and plant integration
Specify the interface: protocol (REST/API, SQL views, file exchange), the direction of each data flow, and the fields carried. Production orders and recipes in; batch results, consumption, inventory movements and deviations out. 'ERP integration included' without a named protocol is the most expensive vague line in a mill automation quote.
Indicative cost bands
For planning only, not a quotation: a batching control package for a small commercial mill typically lands around USD 40,000–90,000 including PLC, HMI, software licences, panels and commissioning. Mid-size mills with load-out and pellet-line integration commonly run USD 90,000–250,000. Field instrumentation, load cells and cabling are usually priced separately.
Commercial terms buyers underestimate
Licence model (perpetual versus subscription, per-seat versus per-site), who owns the PLC program and configuration, remote-support response times and cost, the price of adding recipes or lines later, and how many commissioning and operator-training days are actually included. These decide total cost of ownership far more than the headline licence fee.
