The drinking system is the most common single source

Worn nipples, damaged or mis-set pressure regulators, incorrect line height for bird age, high line pressure and failed drip cups put measurable litres per day into the litter. A water meter reading compared against expected consumption for the flock's age and house temperature is the fastest way to identify leakage before opening any capital discussion.

Ventilation removes moisture — or fails to

Every litre the birds drink must eventually leave as vapour through the ventilation system. If the minimum ventilation rate is below the moisture load, the bed cannot dry regardless of litter quality. This is why wet litter and high ammonia usually appear together and should be evaluated as one system.

Condensation, insulation and floors

Cold roof and sidewall surfaces, missing vapour barriers, cold concrete or earth floors and rain ingress all add moisture. In cold climates condensation can equal or exceed drinker leakage as a source.

How do I confirm drinker leakage is the cause?
Meter daily water consumption and compare it to the expected consumption for bird age, weight and house temperature. A persistent excess, or a rising ratio of water intake to feed intake without a temperature explanation, points to system losses.
Does replacing litter fix the problem?
Only temporarily if the moisture source remains. Litter replacement is a symptom-level action; the water source or ventilation deficit determines whether the new bed stays dry.
What water pressure should nipple lines run at?
It depends on nipple type, bird age and line length, and it should follow the manufacturer's specification for the installed system rather than a generic figure. Regulators must be functional and set per line.
